iTunes Could Not Restore the iPhone Because the Backup was Corrupt — What Now?

Many different issues can trigger the error message "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the device that is being restored," but iTunes hits you with this fairly-generic message. If you still have the original iPhone1 that you made the backup from (and that device still has your data,) you can erase your old backup and make a new one. But what if you no longer have the old iPhone (or you've already wiped it) — what do you do then?
This summer we developed a program, Decipher Backup Repair, that repairs most of the underlying issues that can trigger this error. We're continually working with customers to improve the program and add more repairs as we come across them.
